At the Cubs-Reds game Tuesday night in Chicago, Charles Barkley was on hand at Wrigley Field to toss out the ceremonial first pitch. It went as badly as one might imagine.
Sir Charles’ attempt was juuuuuuuuuust outside out the strike zone.

even the queen of england is giving chuck a face palm for that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw-ucaDiTME
I want to try throwing a pitch from a regulation sized pitching mound. I swear professional athletes should be able to do this no problem, but the amount of bad first pitches we see is astonishing.

Lol he shoots it like a basketball…wrong sport, Chuck.
just wrote something like that when joakim failed the other day. must be deceptive. how long is that throw?
About 60 1/2 ft? That’s about 2/3 of a NBA sized court. That’s longer than I would’ve thought. Still…pro athletes!
wow that’s like 20 meters. i would have thought it was much shorter
I really think its deceptively far. The baseball diamond itself is deceptively big. I played some softball just for fun a little while back. I was playing shortstop and the ball came to me, I caught it, wound up to throw to first and it seemed like it was a mile away. I threw the ball and it bounced maybe 3 times before getting there lol. If you don’t make those throws on a regular basis, you don’t really understand how much force you have to put behind them.
Its not only that it is deceptively long, the mound itself is elevated a lot higher than you would think.
Yeah I played softball too, but never on a regulation sized diamond. I played 1st, but one step and throw and I could hit 3rd no problem. I have a pretty weak throwing arm too (I can’t get outfield to cut off without at least one bounce).
Part of the deception is the traditional camera angles we get too. From behind either the pitcher or the catcher, it’s not going to seem that far. The only side angles we get is either individually of the pitcher or of the batter/catcher. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a side angle which shows both the pitcher and catcher in one shot. It’s been years since I watched baseball though.
Regardless, throw a pitch from the mound of a regulation sized field is now on my bucket list.
Yeah same. Still think it can’t be as difficult as all these videos would suggest.
i agree, having said that, u and i would probably be worse than these guys lol
Oh without question. My attempt, if there’s a Lord above, won’t be broadcasted on national television though!
Not that bad. Curtis Jackson’s was way worse.
coz his belly he did not throw perferctly haha LOL XD
coz his belly he did not throw perfectly haha LOL XD
you don’t know very much about pitching and getting old. I was a 90 MPH+ fast ball pitcher in high school and college and beyond, and I’d have trouble getting a baseball over the plate now, at 67 years old.
No doubt I don’t know jack squat about pitching, but Charles Barkley is only 50. I’m not saying it has to be a strike. Not expecting a perfect fastball right down the middle. Just not terrible.
90% of people, especially older, can’t get a ball across the plate. One sport does not equate to another. different skill sets and muscle mass functions.
