The last six and a half seasons for Pau Gasol have been filled with memories the power forward will cherish way after his career has come to an end.
Upon his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers from the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008, Gasol helped improve the fortunes of the Lake Show immediately. He was critical in helping deliver two Championships to the franchise, as his prolific post and passing skills were finally on full display for a national audience.
Those accomplishments, along with teaming up with one of the game’s greatest warriors in Kobe Bryant, and being coached by arguably the greatest coach the League has seen in Phil Jackson, should be the memories Gasol holds onto when he thinks back to his time in L.A.
It’s those memories that will hopefully shine brighter than when he recalls the frustrations of his final seasons in purple and gold.
The frustrations were many. There were the ever-present trade rumors, the trade that former NBA commissioner David Stern voided that would have sent Gasol to Houston and Chris Paul to the Lakers. There was the unsuccessful pairing with Dwight Howard in former Lakers’ coach Mike D’Antoni’s perimeter-orientated offense, as well as the public struggles with fitting into that system, which did little to take advantage of Gasol’s skills in the post.
During this time, Gasol put on some additional weight, which probably only aided in the several injuries he suffered the past few seasons. The excess weight and injuries hindered the fluidness of his footwork on the low-block and the grace in which his game was built on.
Those watching the Spaniard the past few seasons could see a player trying to make the most out of a situation he had grown extremely uncomfortable in. Despite his apparent unhappiness, injuries, and time in D’Antoni’s system, he still managed to average 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 31.4 minutes last season.
When he became a free agent this summer, although he loved L.A., he wanted to play for a team that could contend for a title, and valued his game. Gasol’s instincts led him to turn down more lucrative offers on the table and sign with the Chicago Bulls.
Even with both the Lakers and Bulls focusing much of their time in free agency on Carmelo Anthony, Chicago and Gasol had been linked together numerous times over the years in trade rumors. A meeting between the two sides, along with Joakim Noah, and a phone conversation with Derrick Rose; was enough to make Gasol feel wanted and see that he could be a key piece in the Bulls realizing their title aspirations.
His presence adds depth and makes for one of the most formidable frontlines in the League, in joining Noah and Taj Gibson.
Fully healthy, some pounds lighter, Gasol served reminder of why he’s still one of the game’s best power forwards during the FIBA World Cup of Basketball. He averaged 20 points in 26.6 minutes on 63.5 percent shooting and added 5.9 rebounds for Spain.
More importantly than those numbers was the way he collected them.
It was the way he moved and ran the floor, how active he was on the defensive end. In dominating both inside and out, he looked more like the player that helped the Lakers win those back-to-back titles in ’09 and 2010, rather then the player that seemed to be worn down by circumstances the last two seasons.
Even with leading Team USA to Gold, Bulls’ head coach Tom Thibodeau and Derrick Rose couldn’t help but to take notice of Gasol’s play.
“I think he’s proving a lot of people wrong,” Rose said. “His touch around the rim is crazy. He should be able to get eight to 10 points from me just driving and dishing him the ball. I think that I’m going to get a lot more assists this year because of that.”
“His defense, his rebounding, his passing, his scoring—all those things have been very, very good,” Thibodeau said. “I love the way he is moving. He looks like he’s completely healthy. He’s rejuvenated.”
If Rose returns to form, along with the new dimension that Gasol gives the Bulls on offense; with their coaching, depth, collective experience, tenacity and will, it’s not a stretch to consider them definite favorites over the new-look Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference—health permitting, of course.
Besides the cold weather, Gasol will still enjoy many of the off-the-court hobbies that he did in Los Angeles. With a profound interest in medicine, during his introductory Bulls press conference, he said he planned on integrating himself with doctors and hospitals in the medical district around the United Center.
One of Gasol’s fondest memories as a youth was watching Michael Jordan and Dream Team from his home in Spain. He now gets to fortify the remainder of professional career in the house that Mike built.
The frustrations he endured during the end of his time in Los Angeles are now in the rearview. It’s on Pau to help construct how the newest chapter in his career will be remembered.

the REAL reason for the Lakers 2009-2010 run ! Pau !
Please let this team stay healthy all year.
Easily ranked too low for what’s to be expected this season. He should instantly become the main threat on a very deep championship caliber team. He will be very motivated once again.
Only fill with Supreme Pau’r Gasol’ine
That pic still hurts…….
I think he’ll easily outperform his ranking. It was the way he was used in offense and lingering injuries more than any real depriciation in his skill that saw his stats fall across the board.
Good luck Pau. Just suck vs LAL.
“He should instantly become the main threat on a very deep championship caliber team”
There’s a lot of things wrong with that statement.
Wow, no.
1. His minutes are getting slashed. Taj Gibson is the best backup Pau has had in years.
2. He is rapidly nearing the Scola category of post defense thanks to his non-existent foot speed.
3. He takes 15 shots to get 17 points. That is STAGGERINGLY inefficient, and something that the Bulls really don’t have time for.
4. D’Antoni inflates EVERYONE’S stats. Thibs deflates them.
He is not “outperforming this ranking.” At this point, he’s being given this ranking for optimism.
Boy do you have a lot to learn – Pau will carry his end and some of others.
I’m a LAKERS fan but second is the BULL’S thanks to PAU..
Cason, 3rd to last paragraph, wtf?
I don’t like how many lakers fans treated Pau.
Chicago looks to be the best of the Leastern.
I have a lot to learn but it damn sure won’t come from you.
On the star driven surface I can understand your reaction. Was even expecting it. Not necessarily from you in particular. I think a Bulls offense will continue to be most effective going through the post the way they’ve played during Rose’s absence. Shouldn’t change because he’s back. A game plan against the Bulls would probably not allow for doubling on Rose and would choose to give Noah touches in the high post denying anything going into Pau on the low block. Let Rose get his, trick him into believing he’s the Rose of old. Not sure how you disagree with the latter part of that sentence. Bulls to me are are more solid at every position in the East and will match up well against Thunder and Spurs. Clippers IMO are a tougher match-up for them.
How many minutes do you realistically see Pau getting? 30? Maybe?
There are 96 minutes to distribute between the 4 and 5. Noah is getting 35-40 of them, guaranteed. Gibson is gonna get 25-30.
That leaves anywhere between 25 and 35 minutes left for Pau, Nazr, and Mirotic. Assuming best case, MAYBE 40 minutes left, but Nazr and Mirotic will combine for at least 10 a game.
Simply put, Pau won’t be on the court for NEARLY as long as you think. And they aren’t going to run the offense through him as long as Rose and Noah are on the court.
And the Bulls are probably the favorites out of the East. But would be a 4th seed in the West.
In the half court set, you want Pau to attract the most attention. You can live with 10 ft jumpers from Noah and Taj. Anything but getting the ball dumped into Pau. Rose will have to get his in transition. This starting line-up is too potent for him to force into the lane, besides it will be crowded.
Pau will be key to the overall offensive efficiency of the team, hence he needs to be on the floor. The defensive concept is team driven and will mask any deficiencies your historical analyses might reveal. Anyway, just my way if seeing things played out. You may very well be proven right…feel free to remind me down the line.
Have you even seen how Pau was used with D’Antoni? His post game and passing didn’t suddenly disappear. He was forced to not use his best skills.
That’s like asking Curry to not shoot 3s. Or Kobe to not operate at the elbows.
learn to not limit yourself. Al Haldie has already schooled you.
Pau is stll a top 5 PF imo. Duncan, Pau, LA, Griffin, Davis in no particular order.
Love can fall back dude needs to learn how to win or have actual PF skills like Davis.
No he isn’t. love needs to learn how to win? What did gasol won exactly last year?
Pau averaged 17 and 9 without being a focus on his team. To me, Pau proves his value when placed in a good situation. He made his impact felt right away as he will this year.
Pau has 2 championships, he gets it. Besides all that, Pau still got his Memphis teams to the playoffs with zero help, something Love never did and will do. Kevin Love on the other hand had the audacity to say that the Cavs will need 3 years to be championship favorites…what is that about? He’s in the best situation you can get into in the league, and he is promising a championship within 3 years? That’s not winner talk at all.
3. wtf are you talking about? he makes over 7 fg a game. You are just trying to crucify him now cause he doesn’t get to the ft line as a big man? wow Noah must be extremely inefficient too cause he takes 10 shots to get 13 points, but makes 5 of those shots. Please stop looking at stat sheets for a second and watch the games a little more closely…ALL players in the NBA especially BIG MEN get fouled nearly every play. Some big men get the ft’s and some do not.
Agree with all of that except for that 4th point
Yeah the guy who never won a playoff game before he got to the laker. With will the stupidity end?
OK a couple of things. Yeah he averaged 17 last year but it was on a career high of shot attempts. Two pau had the same number of playoffs wins as love when Kobe wasn’t playing 0,Pau got his Memphis team to the playoffs when the west was much weaker than it was this past season and the season before love was injured. Kevin love saying that the team isn’t championship ready is probably just Lebron taking pressure of himself and the team in general
you can only play the competition that is in front of you. For the three years in a row the Grizzlies made the playoffs they had an above .500 record, one year they won 50 games, now compare that the Love whose best season was 40 wins. Its not really a comparison. I get that Pau won 0, but he proved himself by winning two rings. Right now, for me Love needs to prove himself, now if he gets into the playoffs and start pulling the type of things that LA pulled in the first round against Houston then i’ll change my opinion on it, but until then Love doesn’t just get gifted a top 5 spot or the top PF spot like so many are willing to give him. Pau takes a spot cause he earned it.
Also career high or not, 15 fga from your best player (minus Kobe) is low. He should have shot the ball more maybe. Only team to get away with something like that is the Spurs.
He’s not a top 5 of at the moment. How many other power forward s can be dominant inside and as a stretch 4 while leading the league on rebounding. That’s not even mentioning his passing. Blake griffin can only play inside, LMA mostly can only play inside l, Davis will probably take that next step though so no issues there. For all the flack love gets about his defense pau is even worse at this stage of his career. Part of the reason he doesn’t post up as much is because he always getting pushed to out of his spots playing soft and this has been an issue before dantoni even got there
Stats seems to be the only thing he understands its almost like he doesn’t even watch games sometimes.
Why is Vucevic not in the Top 50, but this butthole is?
False! He has only said one egregious statement without further detail, Al Haldie has therefore not schooled him.
Caboose, really, really puts a lot of stock into stats. I love stats, but he almost views the game in stats. It’s like a matrix grid line in front of his eyes.
People for whom pposse will troll the boards:
Derrick Rose (inflation of everything about him)
Kevin Love (deflation of anything about him)
Chris Paul (deflation)
Anyone involved with the Bulls organization(inflation)
Anyone involved with the Heat (deflation)
I mean using stats is fine and all but that can’t be used as an argument for everything. Basketball is so much more than statistics there are so many things that happen in a game that statistics simply don’t show or show correctly without the right context. Sometimes you have to analyze the game by watching what’s actually going on not looking at a piece of paper
Sounds about right. He does make some good points about cp3 I’ll give him that
nah not that I have seen. Good points would be something that isn’t normally acknowledged. We all know CP3 likes to hog the ball and be the decision maker sometimes to a detriment. What other “good points” has he made about CP3? I honestly can’t think of any.
Well that’s about it lol. He basically mentioned how cp3s ball dominant style isn’t conductive to winning championships and I agree with him on that. Everything else though not so much
Why do you think his style does not create a winning formula? Just because he hasn’t won?
